Next Baptism Sunday, February 16th

Why should we be baptized?

We have the example of Christ.

As soon as Jesus was baptized, he went up out of the water.  At that moment heaven was opened, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and lighting on him.  And a voice from heaven said, “This is my Son, whom I love, with him I am well ,pleased.”   Matt.3:16-17

We have the exhortation of Christ.

Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you.  And surely I am with you always, to the end of the age.

Matt. 28:19-20

We have the experience of the Church.

But when they believed Philip as he preached the good news of he kingdom of God and the name of Jesus Christ, they were baptized, both men and women.   Acts 8:12

Who should be baptized?

Every person who has believed on Christ for salvation.

Peter replied, “Repent and be baptized,  every   one  of  you, in  the  name  of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins.  And you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.”     Acts 2:38

Those who accepted his message were baptized, and about three thousand were added to their number that day.

Acts 2:41

What is the meaning of baptism?

It illustrates Christ’s death, burial and resurrection.

Baptism means immersion.  He whole body placed under the water parallels burial, in which a body is completely covered.

It illustrates our new life as a follower of Christ.

It indicates we are making a public profession of our faith in Christ.

When should we be baptized?

As soon as possible after we have put our faith in Christ.

Those who accepted his message were baptized, and about three thousand were added to their number that day. Acts 2:41

Then Philip began with that very passage of Scripture and told him the good news about Jesus.  As they traveled along the road, they came to some water and the eunuch said, “Look, here is water.  Why shouldn’t I be baptized?” And he gave orders to stop the chariot. Then both Philip and the eunuch went down into the water and Philip baptized him.

Acts 8: 35-38

When should my children be baptized?
At Abundant Life, we believe in waiting until our children are old
 enough to understand the

meaning of salvation & baptism before they are baptized.

Some churches, of course, baptize babies.  This practice started about three hundred years after the Bible was complete,  We prefer to dedicate babies.  This practice is intended to be a covenant between the parents and God.  The parents are “dedicating” themselves to the commitment of raising their child in the ways of God until they are old enough to make a decision to put their faith in Christ for themselves.

What if I was baptized as an infant?

Infant baptism is different from the baptism described in the Bible, which was for those old enough to make a personal commitment.  Water baptism is meant to follow a fully understood repentance that results in faith being placed in what Jesus alone has done to save us.  At Abundant Life, we feel it is important that every member be baptized the way Jesus demonstrated even though they may have been baptized as a baby.
